The most prominent of what came in the statement of Dimitri Diliani, a member of the Revolutionary Council and spokesman for the reformist and democratic movement in Fatah:
In a firm and unwavering stance against the deeply disturbing and inhumane actions taken by the Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, who was previously convicted of Jewish terrorism charges, Fateh’s Reformist Democratic Faction expresses its unequivocal condemnation of the escalating unwarranted and inhumane measures imposed on Palestinian political prisoners held unlawfully in Israeli prisons. Under the current ideologically extremist government, this trend has intensified, casting a darker shadow over prospects for justice in the region.
Diliani, emphasizes that "Ben Gvir demonstrates a tendency to impose illogical and inhumane restrictions on the lives of unlawfully detained Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli prisons as a political tool to gain support among right-wing Jewish settler voters, as he continues to fail in all aspects of his responsibilities as a National Security minister."
Diliani further explains that the recent directive by Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to reduce family visits for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons from once a month to once every two months is a serious violation of human rights. This decision is expected to be implemented on Sunday, the third of September, further increasing the suffering of prisoners and their families.
In addition to this restrictive measure, Ben Gvir has also canceled administrative releases for sick and elderly prisoners whose sentences are nearing completion, displaying a heartless disregard for basic human rights and international standards of justice.
Diliani states that this decision follows a series of troubling actions, including the cancellation of funding for dental services for Palestinian political detainees in Israeli prisons, attempts to limit their shower times, advocating for the death penalty for those accused of participating in armed struggle against Israeli military occupation, increasing the use of solitary confinement, and authorizing unwarranted invasive searches of prisoners. Additionally, he has halted the operation of bakeries for Palestinian political prisoners, further diminishing their quality of life.
These ongoing and inhumane decisions violate the rights and dignity of Palestinian political prisoners, exacerbate tensions, and raise serious concerns about their treatment as political prisoners.
Approximately 5,000 Palestinian political detainees, including 160 minors and 31 women, are languishing in inhumane Israeli prisons. The international community must take a strong stance against such injustices and hold Israel accountable for its actions.
Diliani emphasizes that Fateh’s Reformist Democratic Faction calls for immediate international intervention and solidarity to address these grave human rights violations, ensure the dignity and rights of Palestinian political prisoners, and promote a just and lasting solution in the region.
